Website criteria (usability) checklist in 2017

I've been thinking a lot lately about my method. Experience is a potent point, but it's unusual that people try to map out that which we know and sit down.
While it's portion of my choices that were compensated, I've decided to reveal this checklist. A few disclaimers: First, I don't claim this list is unique or extensive. Jakob Nielsen has a fantastic 113-level checklist for instance, Homepage Usability, in his book. That is just my way of organizing what I feel is essential while trying to keep it manageable. Second, my usage of conditions might vary from yours. I use "usability" in a really broad sense, and my use of "accessibility" isn't very industry standard. Do not like it? Write your own checklist ;) Finally, an advance warning this post is quite long.
Basic Overview
The listing is split into 4 roughly equal sections, (I) Accessibility, (II) Identification, (III) Navigation, and (IV) Content. I'll explain and rationalize all of line things and the sections under, but you can also download the checklist as a simple, 1-page PDF.
I try to keep it easy with 3 basic scores: (1) Green Check = Great/Pass, (2) Red Check = Wants function, but no disaster, (3) Red X = Bad/Fail. Not all points are fundamentally applicable to all or any sites.

Answer "What do you do?" concisely with a descriptive tag-line. Avoid marketing jargon and boil your worth proposition that is special down to a few words. This can be also aplus for Search Engine Optimization.

Site Load -time Is Reasonable

Call me old-school, but I nonetheless prefer to determine sites come in less than 100KB (60KB is even better). If your site requires eternally to load, most folks will just leave. Yes, many of us have broadband now, but that makes our patience even thinner.

URLs Are Significant & Consumer-friendly

This is a point of some debate, but meaningful keyword-based URLs are broadly speaking great for both visitors and lookup engines. You don't have to reengineer a whole website just to get URLs that are new, but do what you can to make them descriptive and pleasant.

Site Has Custom Maybe Not-discovered/404 Page

If your page in your site doesn't exist, a white page with "4 4 Not Discovered" is an excellent way to lose a consumer. Create a custom 404 page, preferably one that guides your guests to content.

Major Headings Are Obvious & Descriptive

Most individuals do not read on the web, they skim. Use headings (major and small) to set content apart and keep it structured. Headings should be apparent, and for SEO advantage, using heading tags (, , etc.).

Ads & pop ups Are Unobtrusive

Ads are a truth of lifestyle, but combine them properly in to your site. Do not try to force adverts and pop ups down peoples' throats. Also, do a favor to people and make your advertisements clear. In the event you blur the line between advertisements and content too much, your content may experience.

Critical Content Is Above The Fold

The "fold" is that imaginary line where the bottom of your display cuts off a a typical page. Content can fall below the fold, but anything critical to comprehending who you are or everything you do (particularly on the home-page) should fit on that first display. Screen resolution that is average these days is about 1024x768, depending on your audience.
